Imidazole is a highly polar, water soluble heterocyclic compound which has both acidic and basic properties. Many natural products as well as drugs contain the imidazole ring. As such, it is widely used in pharmaceuticals, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory agents. It is also a precursor to a variety of agrichemicals. In electroplating it is an additive used as a leveler in copper plating processes.
